Shepard Fairy, Obey Giant and the 11th Hour Action Campaign

August 16, 2007

“I wanted to write a long explanation of why I’m doing this print to help promote the movie the 11th Hour and to generate funds for the 11thhouraction.com. Unfortunately, I’m short on time and so is planet Earth as we know it. Basically the film expands on the Earth crisis explained in an Inconvenient Truth. Global warming, deforestation, pollution, dependence on petroleum, and over -population. The film puts these issues in frightening perspective but also shows there are solutions. Skip the next Rob Sneider movie and to see the 11th Hour and you’ll be both avoiding pollution and educating yourself about it. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for MY kid! Thanks”

(PS: this poster is also FOR SALE on this site!)

Shepard Fairy is the creator of the famous underground icon simply known as Obey Giant, and has been a hero of mine for some time. Obey stickers appear on street corners, stop signs and tshirts around the globe. With this image he has successfully brought this artistic message and experiment in phenomenology to the public sphere … I’m thrilled that he has decided to participate in the 11th Hour Action Campaign and I can’t wait to see these posters and stickers up everywhere in the world and on the web!

Leading Man Leads a ‘Green Revolution’

August 12, 2007

Top Story on Nightline:

” Leonardo DiCaprio says it was years ago when then-Vice President Al Gore took the time to explain to him the phenomenon of global warming and what it means for Earth.

“I was terrified, “DiCaprio said. “I think I was terrified, like anyone would be. And I didn’t quite understand the connection that we had as human beings and the fact that we could literally alter our climate in that way.”

Now the 32-year-old actor, whose career skyrocketed even as the on-screen Titanic sunk, is a passionate advocate for the environment and saving the planet. His documentary “The 11th Hour,” set for release this week, presents an argument that says, in a nutshell, “Time is running out. You need to listen and believe it.”

The Value of Nature

August 3, 2007

So, to continue with the Tree riff, I was reading The Economist this week and there was an interesting article about the value of urban trees. We so often take trees, and most of nature, for granted. We don’t often think of their economic value. So, in this article, they calulcated that the value of an urban tree can be as high as $100,000, even more! Because the tree is doing valuable things like cleaning air and water, providing habitat and lots of other things. To put that in perspective, the tree that may grow in front of your house is 2 to 3 times more valuable than the car parked in the driveway. And the tree is only valuable if it is living; not dead. So don’t cut it down and think you can sell it for that amount. The point of the article and what we all are beginning to understand is that the things that nature does for us for free are worth a whole lot of money, in some cases it is invaluable, and we have not recongized it or undestood its value. It is now time to do so.

The 11th Hour

August 2, 2007

Friend,

I am writing to tell you about my new environmental film, “The 11th Hour.” The film documents the environmental crises we face and the solutions we must begin to implement.

Please take a look at the trailer here: http://www.11thhouraction.com/trailer

With the help of over fifty of the world’s most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, “The 11th Hour” documents the grave problems facing the planet’s life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans’ habitats are all addressed.

However, the most powerful element of “The 11th Hour” is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but an offering of hope and solutions. The film ends with a call for restorative action through reshaping human activity.

“The 11th Hour” is opening on August 17th in New York and Los Angeles. On the 24th it opens in other cities, and in the following weeks across the country. It would be great if you could go see it and bring a friend. You can go to www.11thhouraction.com to get more information on the movie and when it will play near you.

We need the message of this movie to hit as far and wide as possible.

The hope is us. Let’s begin.

Thank You,

Leonardo DiCaprio
